Energy proportional data center applications

چکیده
Data center applications pose challenges with respect to their performance and energy requirements. These applications are mostly network oriented applications that are executed in data centers. The energy usage of a data center becomes more important as it scales and, thus, it approaches its physical limitations. The expectation of achieving maximum performance, in terms of latency and throughput, conflicts with those strict energy requirements imposed by the data center itself. The compromise in use today by data center operators that maximizes performance and satisfies respective service level agreements requires that servers remain underutilized, which are able to provide minimal latency and high throughput. On the other hand, servers are not energy proportional which means that an underutilized server consumes more power per unit of performance than a fully utilized one. In this write-up, I am going to present two methods that increase the performance of network applications and one method that aims to balance the QoS of applications and energy consumption of servers in a data center. Finally, I will present my research proposal that aspires to combine available methods into providing a framework for energy proportional data center applications.

True Energy-efficient Data Processing is Only Gained by Energy-proportional DBMSs
As energy consumption and related costs are becoming a critical component for operating a data center, system developers as well as database researcher have to deal with this fact and should come up with approaches that increase the energy efficiency of a data center. Several proposal are already present in the literature which introduce approaches to increase the energy efficiency in a given s...
متن کاملStudy of NACA 0015 for Diffuser Design in Tidal Current Turbine Applications (TECHNICAL NOTE)
Tidal energy is the most foreseeable form of renewable energy. Tidal energy can be harnessed by tidal barrage, tidal fence and tidal current technologies. Present efforts are focused on diffuser augmented tidal turbines that exploit the kinetic energy of the tidal currents. The power output by a tidal turbine is directly proportional to the cube of velocity of incoming fluid flow. Thus, even a ...

Introduction: Microdosimetry is a fundamental method that studies the nature of energy transfer in micron volumes in the particular biological cells. In a biological target, the amount of ionization does not indicate the magnitude of biological radiation-induced damage. However, the severity of biological harm depends strongly on the amount of the linear energy transfer along t...
متن کاملThe Importance of absorbed dose in medical applications
Radiation damage depends on energy absorption, and is approximately proportional to the absorbed energy density in the tissue. In external radiation consideration with a certain energy flux, the amount of absorbed dose in each point of the tissue depends on the type of radiation, the radiation energy, the depth of the place of receipt, and the main components of the absorber environment. The ab...
متن کاملPractical Data Center Power Proportionality
Energy accounts for a significant fraction of the operational costs of a data center and data center owners are increasingly interested in moving towards power proportional designs. However, we show that current power proportional solutions are inherently limited in the energy savings they can offer; the reason is that they focus on managing the data center IT equipment (disks, servers) and neg...
